If you’re a fan, there’s been a lot to gossip about them in the last couple years.
Why did Liam leave the group so unexpectedly? Why was “Pat” a banned word in Liam’s stream chat for a while? Why did the remaining three members all start setting up solo Youtube channels in addition to producing content for the group channel? Why didn’t Pat ever turn up on any of Liam’s, Matt’s, or Woolie’s solo channels, even though all three of those guys crossed over outside of Best Friends almost constantly? Why was so much of their Halloween 2018 offerings this year just reheated leftovers from stuff we saw on Matt’s solo channel for Halloween in 2017?
And now for the harder, more pertinent questions:
If Matt and Pat aren’t friends anymore, couldn’t they at least finish out Kingdom Hearts first, given it’s a Matt and Woolie series? Does this have anything to do with the fact that Pat’s girlfriend, Paige, was on the podcast last week, a person who seems to be deep in the fringes of some really toxic movements? Does this have anything to do with Pat’s multiple meltdowns in the last month, some of which were about him defending said girlfriend’s right to be in those fringes? How relevant is that very recent episode of Matt’s Dante’s Inferno solo LP where he starts it so drunk he can barely talk and is clearly angry at something from before the recording started?
These are not questions I’m asking because I’m curious about the answers. I have already come to my own conclusions on these things. I’m merely showing you guys where to start reading between the lines so you can draw your own conclusions, good or ill.
In a lot of ways, I don’t even want to make this post, because these are some very fresh open wounds, and being social media, you are inviting all kinds of unexpected responses. I don’t intend to come off as sounding aggressive, but these things don’t happen in a vacuum. Information gaps are going to get filled in with something. Assumptions are only natural, even if one is only grasping at straws.
I think the writing has been on the wall for the Best Friends for a while. Their growth had slowed way down. They were the little channel that could. As guys like Game Grumps easily passed multiple millions of subscribers, Best Friends languished at 900k. I never really understood why. They probably didn’t, either. And after Liam left, you could feel a kind of… stagnation begin. They stopped trying out new ideas. The whole thing seems like it got thrown off balance.
When they all independently started their own solo channels and began pouring their fun new ideas into those, it really felt like they were getting things in place for the inevitable dissolution of Super Best Friends. I didn’t want to believe it at first, and even after I accepted it, I still didn’t expect it would end this way. But I guess that’s how it always goes with these things.
I still have a lot of Best Friends videos I never watched from back when things were so crazy last year with me moving to Nevada. I have probably over two hundred videos of theirs I’ve yet to see, multiple LPs worth, from the back half of Yakuza Zero all the way to somewhere in mid-2018, all tucked away in my “Watch Later” list. But it’s going to be extremely weird watching those now knowing there won’t be any more after a certain point.
Best Friends were the only “daily update” Let’s Play Channel I still subscribed to. Hearing those guys crack up laughing or scream “YEAHHHH!!!!” at the dumbest stuff got me through a lot of moments in my life. Against all odds, I somehow never got sick of them, even when their technical problems were at their worst or they started to feel a little too sleazy (mostly in those early videos; they got a little better about that stuff as time went on).
Obviously Matt will continue to fill the void (as he has been for the last few months now), but it’s also a different kind of vibe. Best Friends was built on raw banter.
Thank you for Metal Wolf Chaos. Thank you for Omikron, Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit. Thank you for Yakuza. Thank you for Downcoming. And Man vs. Wild. And Ride to Hell. And all of the Shitstorms of Scariness. And Shut Up And Jam Gaiden. And NieR. And, and, and…
And I hope you all keep landing on your feet. From someone who has taken 12 years to scrape together 17,000 Youtube subscribers, good luck out there. It’s the end of an era to be sure.
